A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
