British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
